Maes releases Kansas termination letter

GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes has released personnel files showing his boss knew that he was investigating a gambling ring and meeting with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Maes provided his termination letter from 1985 to The Associated Press. In it, Liberal, Kansas Police Chief Richard Kistner told Maes he was being fired for telling his girlfriend that her family was under investigation.

In his dismissal appeal, Maes told Kistner he told his girlfriend six months after the investigation into a gambling ring ended that her family had been under investigation "as a gesture of love" for the lies he had told her.

"I have maintained from the beginning the veracity of my account - an account that has now been independently verified," commented Maes. "The accusation that I somehow fabricated the story of working with KBI has now been completely debunked, and I would hope that my critics will now apologize with the same zeal they formerly used to attack. I would also encourage any Republicans who withdrew their support based on the inaccurate initial reports to reconsider their decision and once again support the Republican nominee for Governor."

The KBI has previously said Maes never worked with them. The police department and the KBI did not return phone calls seeking comment.
