All plans for Monument residents center on a damaged tanker car containing hydrochloric acid. The leak has been stopped using a magnetic seal, but hundreds of homes are under evacuation orders.
The train sits directly east of Mitchell and Synthes. It awaits the arrival of a specially trained crew which will move the acid to another container. That could be completed by tonight, but residents have been told to plan to stay away from home until Friday morning.
A shelter is open at Grace Best Elementary School at 66 Jefferson, but there are few facilities for pets. Coffee for evacuees has been provided by Serranos. Food is being provided by the Red Cross. Rosie's Diner provided free meals for any who had been displaced.
The Hampton in Monument offers rooms for $79 and pets are accepted. Rates for one night at the Fairfield in Monument are running $89 and there's a special $59 deal offered at the Sundance.
School was called off today in District 38 and schools may be closed tomorrow as well. Church services have been canceled for tonight at Tri-Lakes Chapel.
The Synthes plant is closed today.
