Man arrested in fatal shooting north of Durango

One man is arrested after a shooting north of Durango.

The La Plata County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death that happened early Saturday morning at a camping site about 20 miles north of Durango.

Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 911 call early Saturday morning that said a man had been shot.

When Deputies arrived, campers directed them to a man who was laying on the ground at another camp site.

That man, David Jones, 26, was dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Jones is from Utah and a student at Fort Lewis College in Durango

After interviewing witnesses, Deputies arrested Durango resident Brenden Dow Ashburn, 37, at the scene and transported him to La Plata County Detention Center where he is being held without bond on a charge of Murder in the First Degree.

Bond will be set at his initial court appearance.

There are no other suspects in the case.

A handgun believed used in the shooting was recovered.

The reason for the shooting remains under investigation.
