Man headed toward trial in Rifle officer shooting

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A man accused of shooting a Rifle police officer who was investigating a report of domestic violence is due to be arraigned Aug. 9.

A judge ruled at a preliminary hearing Wednesday that there's enough evidence to put 53-year-old Phillip Amonette on trial on charges that he tried to kill officer Garrett Duncan on Oct. 22.

Police say Duncan saw Amonette with a gun that night and that Amonette allegedly ignored orders to drop it. Officer Dewey Ryan says he saw Amonette shoot Duncan once before Ryan returned fire.

Duncan was wearing a bulletproof vest and survived.
Amonette is jailed on a $1 million bond. The Post Independent reports his attorney has suggested there is evidence to undermine prosecutors' allegations.
