Man killed in crash during chase south of Salida

DENVER (AP) - Authorities say a man was killed in a crash after firing at deputies before a chase in southwestern Colorado.

Betty Benson, a spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department, says the chase began in Leadville at about 5 a.m. when a deputy tried to pull the suspect over for speeding. She says the man immediately began shooting at the deputy, and the chase continued through Chaffee and Saguache counties.

The man, whose name has not been released, crashed his car near Villa Grove, about 25 miles south of Salida.

The Denver Post reports it is unclear if deputies exchanged fire with the suspect or what led directly to the fatal crash.

None of the deputies or Colorado State Patrol troopers involved in the chase were injured.
