CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - An Indiana sex offender has pleaded guilty of killing his former girlfriend and her two young children and sexually assaulting her teen daughter in southern Colorado.
The Canon City Daily Record 31-year-old reported that Jaacob Van Winkle agreed to plead guilty to all charges against him in exchange for a life sentence. Van Winkle could have faced the death penalty.
Van Winkle is accused of stabbing a 35-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son on March 9 in Canon City. Police say her 16-year-old daughter escaped and ran to a neighbor's for help.
He was convicted in Indiana of child molestation and other sex crimes involving girls as young as 5 and 7 in 2004. He failed to register as a sex offender after moving to Canon City.
Van Winkle will be sentenced in September.
