Many unanswered questions remain in the discovery of a man's body near Manzanola on Sunday. As the Otero County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate, many in this small Southern Colorado town are still dealing with the shock.
"We never see this in Manzanola," says Christine Padilla, a Manzanola resident. The town has a population close to about 500 people. It seems many of them are asking the same question.
"They just want to know who it was so they know if it's someone they knew," says Patrick Lane, who works at a restaurant in Manzanola called Jaspers.
The man's body found out in a pasture on County Road 11, a few miles southwest of Manzanola. His name hasn't been released, pending the results of an autopsy and we still don't know how he died.
Further up the road, residents in this small farming community are still in disbelief. "It's very unusual because we're a family town, a family community. It's just scary," said Padilla.
"Kind of stunned actually, because nothing like that really happens around here too much. It's a pretty quiet little place," said Lane.
The Otero County Sheriff hasn't released any further details publicly, but several people in town claim they know who the victim is. A man who says he's the victim's brother passed by in his pickup, working through his grief by searching for clues along County Road 11. Like many people in town, he's still looking for answers about what happened and how the body got there.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting the sheriff's office in this case.
