Mayor idea rejected in Pueblo

Two proposals to add a mayor to Pueblo City government were rejected by voters Tuesday.  The first would have changed the city charter to require a strong mayor form of government.  That mayor would have replaced the current city manager.  The idea was rejected by a two-to-one margin.  The measure was placed there by petition.

Another measure that would have turned a city council member into a symbolic mayor, while keeping the city manager also failed -- by a better than three to one margin.  It was placed on the ballot by a vote of the city council.

"I'm ecstatic about the results. I was cautiously optimistic but tonight is true happiness for the citizens," said Vera Ortegon, Pueblo City Council President.
