Meeting on Fort Lyon prison closing moved to Las Animas

A town hall type meeting to explain the decision to close the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility has been moved from La Junta to Las Animas.

Tom Clements, the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, said closing the prison will save an estimated $6.3 million a year.

Under the plan, the facility will close on August 31, 2011. Fort Lyon was formerly a nursing home for veterans. The facility will revert back to federal ownership.

The DOC will answer questions at Las Animas High School on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
