Millions for renovations at Colorado Springs sports complex

More than $2-million of your tax dollars is funding big changes at the Skyview Sports Complex out by the Colorado Springs Airport. The grass is gone from all the playing fields and front loaders are now doing prep work for artificial turf.

The work is possible because voters approved new uses for the Trails and Open Space Tax (TOPS). The reason for the change is because it has been so difficult keeping grass alive in that part of town. "With the drought and with the weather conditions it's very windy out there on a very consistent basis" said Colorado Springs Parks Manager, Kurt Schroeder, "It's been a real challenge for us to keep a very consistent and good playing surface."

Planners say the turf will save money in years ahead.
The original plan was to put the artificial turf on two fields, but because of competitive bidding it's going in on all six fields.
