Up to 50 mobile homes were damaged or destroyed in Ellicott along Highway 94, in eastern El Paso County, Wednesday afternoon.

As of 8 p.m. the fire is still burning at Riley's Mobile Home Sales at 23250 Highway 94.

The homes are stacked up very close together and the fire has been jumping from structure to structure. Riley's is described by people in the area as a salvage yard or junk yard.

The fire also spread south in adjacent prairie land.

Multiple fire agencies and as many as 100 fire crews and responders are involved. Thick, black smoke was visible to the east of Colorado Springs and as far away as Pueblo when the fire started around 4:00 p.m.

Highway 94 was closed at Log Road, which is west of Ellicott, for several hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
