More protests in France over entitlement change

PARIS (AP) - Tens of thousands of protesters are marching throughout France in the latest emonstrations against plans to raise the retirement age that are awaiting President Nicolas Sarkozy's signature.

The marches amount to a last-ditch attempt led by labor unions to derail the conservative government's aim to boost the retirement age by two years to salvage the money-losing pension system.

The Interior Ministry says at midday Saturday about 142,000 demonstrators were marching, down from about 198,000 at the same time of day in similar protests Oct. 28. Unions typically have
higher estimates.

Strikes linked to the protests disrupted train and air travel, and caused gasoline shortages in much of October.

The bill has cleared Parliament and Sarkozy is expected to sign it in mid-November.
