More soldiers and more noise for Ft. Carson?

Since September 11th, 2001, Fort Carson has seen tremendous growth, going from nearly 15,000 soldiers to nearly 25,000. More growth is anticipated down the road.

As they prepare for that growth, Fort Carson brass are also preparing to step on some toes, unintentionally. At a town hall meeting Friday about future growth on the Mountain Post, community members had a chance to ask questions about projects in the works.

Dana Costa was looking for answers, after hearing that Fort Carson is looking to run new railroad tracks near her home and her neighbors.

"We want to know how it's going to effect our neighborhood." says Costa, who is President of the Stratmoor Hills Home Owners Association. "Things go forward and they'll be building those spurs before we know it."

The rail spur was one of seven items on the agenda, that Brigadier General James Pasquarette acknowledged are necessary to meet the demands of the growing mountain post.

"We have to balance the need to train and deploy for national defense with the impact on the community," explains Col. Robert McLaughlin, garrison commander for Fort Carson.

That same dilemma is present in another possible element of expansion, bringing a new aviation brigade to Fort Carson, along with one hundred or so helicopters. However, critics charge more soldiers will bring more noise.

"I really can't publicly say that we're going to be able to have quiet hours based on the importance of being experts on night operations." explains Brig. Gen. James Pasquarette. He adds that nothing officially has been decided to send to aviation unit to Fort Carson.

While the army is vague about the specific impact on neighbors, Costa, for one,
is just happy to be included in the conversation.

"Fortunate that they are involving us, but it's in their hands," Costa explains.

She's doing her part to be heard; but as for results, nothing was decided or announced at Friday's meeting. That's something that Costa will have to continue to watch for.
