Mother Nature helping California firefighters

Cooler temperatures and calmer winds are helping firefighters in their battle against the wildfire that's burned homes and forced hundreds of evacuations near California's Mojave Desert.

The more than 1,400-acre blaze that chased residents from the Old West Ranch community about 10 miles south of Tehachapi was 25 percent contained yesterday. State fire officials say if the weather continues to cooperate, officials expect to have it fully contained by Friday.

The firefighting command revised the number of destroyed structures down to 25, and a Kern County fire spokesman said most were homes. Another 150 homes in the loosely connected community remain threatened.
