Mother of man killed speaks out

Joy Martin is still having trouble believing that her son, Greg Martin, was stabbed and killed in Colorado Springs last week.

46-year-old Greg Martin had been working for a few months at the Park Ridge apartments as a maintenance worker. On Friday morning, police believe Martin walked in on a burglary in progress. They say the suspect stabbed Martin before running away. He was arrested a short time later.

21-year-old Isaiah Jackson is being charged with first degree murder in Martin's death.

Just before Joy Martin got a phone call that would change the rest of her life, she had an odd moment. She was at work in Ohio and a song got caught in her head.

"My son's favorite song as a child was Pennies from Heaven, and I started singing that out of the blue; I had no clue why I was singing it;" Joy Martin says that was at about 9:30 (MST). "It was about the time it was all going down."

"I started singing that song, and I knew, I knew when I got the call what it was about because the other kids, that was not their song; that was Greg's song," says Joy Martin.

She got the news; Joy Martin rushed to Colorado Springs to be with her family.

"What really hits home is his 13-year-old daughter," says Joy Martin, as she got emotional. "He will not be able to walk her down that aisle, and his son, he is devastated."

Also, he won't be able to spend any more time with his niece who looked up to him; Martin's mother says the little girl would hold her arms up and say, 'Uncle Greg, take me to the moon!'

Martin's family is remembering him as a loving man.

"My boy was not perfect, but my boy thought of others before he thought of himself," says Joy Martin. At first she turned down News 5's request for an interview, but later decided that she would do one, for Greg.

Joy Martin says the family is setting up a memorial fund in honor of Greg for his children. That is expected to be at US Bank, but News 5 will put out more specific information when it's established.

There will a viewing in Colorado Springs for friends and family of Greg Martin. That's scheduled to be from 4 pm until 8 pm at the Springs Funeral Services at 3115 E. Platte Ave. Afterwards Martin's family will take his body back to Ohio for a viewing next Monday and a funeral next Tuesday.
