INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team will compete in the 2014 NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships as the South Central's No. 10 seed in the postseason fields announced today by the Division II Men's Golf Committee. The Mountain Lions will return to the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas, for the regional championships May 5-7.
UCCS has qualified for the regional championships for the 13th consecutive season. The Mountain Lions qualified for the national championships for the fifth time in program history last season and finished No. 10 at the national tournament.
The Mountain Lions competed at Grey Rock in the first spring tournament of the season March 3-4. UCCS finished sixth among the 16 teams in a weather-shortened St. Edward's Invitational. Three of the teams that finished ahead of the Mountain Lions earned the No. 1 seed in their respective regions today. Stephen Cook shot a 145, with a 68 in the second round, to tie for third in the overall results at the tournament.
UCCS has finished in the top five of three of the last four tournaments. The Mountain Lions were third at both the Dallas Baptist Classic April 7-8 and at the RMAC Championships earlier this week.
The RMAC makes up half of the qualifiers from the South Central Region, with No. 1 Western New Mexico, No. 4 Colorado Mines, No. 8 Colorado State-Pueblo, No. 9 Colorado Christian and No. 10 UCCS. Colorado Mesa and Regis will also be sending individual golfers.
The top six teams and top two individuals on non-qualifying teams from the West and South Central championships will advance to the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championships May 19-23 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
