SAN DIEGO (AP) - Spongebob has some new company. Scientists using a remote-controlled robot submersible have discovered a new species of sponge in deep waters off San Diego. But it won't be much of a pal for Spongebob Squarepants. U-T San Diego reports the newly discovered sponge is poisonous. Researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute say the strange sponge is a twig-like carnivore. The scientists add killer sponges sound like creatures from a B-grade horror movie. But the sponge is uniquely adapted to thrive in the lightless depths. The new species is named the harp sponge, or Chondrocladia lyra, because its basic structure is shaped like a lyre or harp.
