Multi-car crashes shut down I-25

Updated.... I-25 is now back open, after a series of accidents shut down both northbound and southbound lanes for several hours. The crashes happened just south of the South Academy exit.

The State Patrol says there were actually three separate crashes, all in the same vicinity. Someone stopped to help a car, stuck on the side of the road, and the car was then hit by another vehicle. A pickup truck then swerved to avoid that crash, and rolled across the median, hitting a northbound vehicle. And a separate vehicle sideswiped another vehicle in the southbound lanes while trying to avoid the mess.

A total of six vehicles were involved, and between five and seven people were transported to Memorial Hospital. Two people from the pickup versus northbound vehicle are listed in serious condition. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
