Murder suspect caught

The man suspected of gunning down and killing one man and shooting another during an attempted robbery last week at a eastside Colorado Springs Auto Zone is now off the streets. "Earlier today our investigators and patrol officers caught up to Ernest Schmidt, otherwise known as Edward Coffey." explains Sgt. Steve Noblitt with CSPD.

It all started when police were tipped off that Schmidt was hiding in a home near the Valley Hi Golf Course. When police began to sneak up on him, he ran. Police and witnesses say Schmidt ran across a residential area and hopped a fence before running on to the golf course. That's when the pursuit heated up. As he neared the Satellite Hotel, police narrowed in on their suspect and caught him.

During the chase a peculiar piece of evidence was left behind. Apparently Schmidt was wearing a red wig which fell off when he ran. Golf course beverage cart driver Brittany Lasha spotted it, as she made her rounds. Well, I was just driving by like I normally do and I say, I thought it was a squirrel, but it was just a red wig." she says.

Also arrested was Schmidt's wife, 35 year old Dawn Morgan. She's charged as an accessory to 1st degree murder. Police say after coming off such a bloody week in Colorado Springs, this was a big one for investigators and the community. "These guys deserve our appreciation and it's because of their efforts that these two folks are off the streets." says Noblitt.

Schmidt was arrested on charges of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated robbery, and second degree kidnapping. He's being held without bond at the El Paso County Jail.
