NC vacation island to be cleared as Hurricane nears

Tourists on a North Carolina vacation destination island are being asked to board ferries and head for the mainland ahead of powerful Hurricane Earl.

More evacuations could be on the way as Earl threatens to sideswipe the East Coast and ruin vacation plans for people over the long Labor Day weekend.

Hyde County emergency officials have started evacuating Ocracoke Island off North Carolina of about 5,000 visitors. Residents are being allowed to stay.

In Virginia, Gov. Bob McDonnell plans to declare an emergency, a preliminary step needed to muster emergency personnel should Earl hit.

Earl has weakened to a Category 3 hurricane.
