A neighbor of a pregnant woman shot to death Monday says the mother-to-be was frequently seen around her apartment complex with her other three children. James Darnley says he heard the fatal shots around 9:30 Monday morning at The Summit Apartments near Lake Avenue and Southgate Boulevard in Colorado Springs. "I heard something go pop-pop," Darnley said, "and I thought it was like a mo-ped or something like I've heard before."
The shots killed the expectant mother. Her baby was delivered alive by doctors at Memorial Hospital and the newborn is currently in intensive care. The shooter remains at-large, but a Colorado Springs police spokesperson said it's likely the shooting was not a random act.
Darnley said the woman had only moved in recently. He saw her often while he walked his dogs and said she was always friendly and had her other children with her. When another neighbor said that it was a pregnant woman who had been shot, Darnley knew it had to be her. "I'd say she was maybe 7 or 8 months pregnant," Darnley said. Though Darnley saw her often, he says he never got her name.
The woman's name has not yet been released. Police have also not identified a specific suspect or physical description of the shooter.
