New fire codes influenced by Waldo Canyon Fire aftermath

Colorado Springs City Council has given preliminary approval to tougher new fire codes in the city. It comes after months of study and review by the fire department following the Waldo Canyon Fire burning through the Mountain Shadows neighborhood.

Many of the new rules were created related to the findings. "We actually did fire investigations on the 391 homes that were impacted by the fire," said Colorado Springs Deputy Fire Marshal, Kris Cooper.

The updated fire codes mandate things like fire resistant material for roofs, siding and decks. They also address landscaping, by requiring a 30 foot zone around structures. It that zone more space is required between trees and bushes to keep fire from easily climbing from one plant to another and then to a home.

City Council still has to give final approval.
