The gym at UCCS has long suffered the lamentable distinction of being the smallest among all schools in the Rocky mountain Athletics Conference.
But all that changes this Friday when the university officially opens their new events center, on campus.
The $9 million 27,000 square foot arena can comfortably seat more than 1,600 people.
Susan Szpyrka, the vice chancellor for administration and finance says when the center is not being used for athletics, the university plans to use it to host guest speakers and other special events.
"We plan on having concerts, we plan on expanding our lecture series, we can do banqueting, we can seat up to 700 people in here for banqueting, and we do have a system by which we can flip our wood floors to carpet," Szpyrka said.
Friday's grand opening celebration will include a pair of basketball games by the mountain lion men's and women's teams.
