With a new school year about to begin, Falcon's D49 embraces a new plan.
It's called the "Innovation Initiative" and the district is no longer going to be headed by one superintendent. Instead, there will be four zones, each with different names, and each headed by an assistant superintendent.
Each zone has a handful of schools, for example the "Power Zone" consists of Stetson Elementary, Odyssey Elementary, Ridgeview Elementary, Skyview Middle School, and Vista Ridge High School.
On Thursday morning, hundreds of teachers, staff, board members and a parent-based committee met at Vista Ridge High School to learn more about the initiative.
Mike Pickering from D49 speaks to the goal of the plan is to "increase [the] feeling of community within our schools. Obviously, increase student achievement and that people, as I say, as part of the community piece, it'll just feel like a respectful place to be."
He went on to say that since there are fewer schools in each zone, the hope is that there will be more coordination among the teachers and staff of each school within each zone, as well as with parents to help identify and meet the needs of students.
Pickering adds, "We hope, by the end, what we get is increased student achievement and people treating each other right."
