COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A former police officer who shot a man who opened fire at her church in Colorado Springs has come out as gay.
The Gazette reports that Jeanne Assam said she was told by New Life Church officials that she was no longer welcome after she informed them. But the Rev. Brady Boyd tells the newspaper that's untrue. He says church officials would never tell someone to leave because of their sexual orientation and that Assam will always be a hero at New Life.
Assam was a volunteer security guard at the church when a 24-year-old gunman shot and killed two parishioners Dec. 9, 2007. He killed two other people at a training center for Christian missionaries in Arvada the previous night.
Authorities say Murray killed himself, but Assam wounded him.
