The leader of the U.S. military's homeland security command says the nation needs to work with the Mexican and Canadian armed forces to ensure its own security.

Adm. James Winnefeld Jr., head of Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base, made the comment this week in a blog entry marking the command's eighth anniversary.

Northcom was established in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attack to oversee the military's response to enemy attacks and natural disasters and to help civilian authorities.

Winnefeld notes that Northcom is providing training and equipment to Mexico's army and navy to help in the fight against drug cartels. He says Northcom is also training law enforcement agencies along the U.S.-Mexican border.
