The Colorado Springs-based U.S. Northern Command has sent an officer to the U.S. Virgin Islands to consult with civil authorities over its response to Hurricane Earl.
Army Col. Robert Freehill was sent to the islands on Saturday.
Northern Command says Freehill will work with federal, state and local authorities to see what military capabilities could be used in the wake of a hurricane. Northern Command oversees the U.S. military's homeland defense and disaster response and supports civilian authorities.
It was formed after the Sept.11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Its headquarters are at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
