Northcom pitching-in with Haiti relief

The U.S. military is helping transport a Mexican army field kitchen to Haiti to feed earthquake victims and relief workers.

The U.S. Northern Command, based at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, says the field kitchen is expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Friday.

Northcom helped arranged for a U.S. Air Force C-5 transport plane from the 436th Airlift Wing at Dover Air Force Base, Del., to pick up the kitchen at Santa Lucia Air Base, Mexico, on Feb. 6. It was flown to Jacksonville, Fla., and loaded on a barge bound for Haiti.

The field kitchen is in a tractor-trailer rig. It was deployed in Texas in 2005, where it served 170,000 meals over 20 days after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
