The Obama administration and the Pentagon are trying to stay firm on their commitment to withdraw most U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year. The problem is Afghan President Karzai doesn't seem to be on the same timetable, and is waffling ahead of new elections in the spring.
Worse case scenario is the U.S. military will withdraw all but 8,000 troops, but will remain in a training capacity.
The Pentagon representatives say it's uncertain if Afghan forces can defend their own country against Al Qaeda once the U.S. withdraws.
