President Barack Obama says it's time to prepare students for life after high school and put better teachers at the front of the classroom.
In his weekly radio and internet address today, Obama promised to rewrite the nation's sweeping and controversial education law known as No Child Left Behind.
The 2001 education law that focused on accountability in the classroom but has fallen short of its original goals.
Obama gave few specifics but says excellence will be rewarded and schools that do well but could do better will be encouraged to improve.
The announcement's timing suggests Obama is looking beyond the health care proposal that still lingers in Congress.
