Obama seeks $1.35 billion more for education

President Barack Obama is asking Congress for $1.35 billion to extend an education grant program for states.

Speaking at an elementary school in Virginia, Obama said the funds would allow more states to obtain competitive grants through president's "Race to the Top" program. The $787 billion economic stimulus program that Obama signed into law soon after taking office already includes $4.3 billion in education grants for states that amend education laws and policies.

The deadline to apply for the program is Tuesday, and officials expect more than 30 states to apply. Obama says extending the program would allow more states to win grants.
