Obama urges Senate to embrace immigration overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is urging the Senate to move quickly on a comprehensive immigration overhaul drafted by a bipartisan group of senators.

Obama says that the bill is a compromise measure and that nobody will get everything he wants - including him. But he says it's largely consistent with his own principles for immigration reform.

The senators plan to formally introduce the bill Tuesday after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer briefed Obama on the details of the bill Tuesday at the White House. It would create a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally, but only after steps are taken to secure the border. It would also remake the nation's legal immigration system.
