Obituary surfaces for suspect in Springs cold case

COLORADO SPRINGS - A strange twist has surfaced in a 16-year old homicide cold case out of Colorado Springs. Just after midnight on may 24, 1997 Gino Romero, 13, was shot and killed while riding in the back seat of an old black sedan during a drive by shooting in the neighborhood of Circle Dr. and Lelaray St.

Then on Tuesday, an obituary was published in the Alamosa Valley Courier for a Socorro Anselmo Gutierrez. The FBI had been searching for a 43 year old man by the same name and believed him to be somewhere in the San Luis Valley. Gutierrez and an accomplice, Vinnicio Martinez, were sought in connection with the Romero homicide.

Spokesperson Dave Joly tells News 5, "We can't confirm at this time that this is Socorro Anselmo Gutierrez. We still have to do DNA testing and we are being cautious about releasing any information at this time."
