SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Sacramento-area police officer was shot and critically wounded following an attempted traffic stop, and a suspect was arrested.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the officer was hit by several bullets from what police believe was a lone shooter.

The shooting came after a car and then a foot chase following the officer's attempts to pull a vehicle over in the Sacramento area around 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit says 32-year-old suspect Tyron Smith was arrested late Saturday night.

The wounded officer is a member of the Twin Rivers Police Department.

Twin Rivers police spokesman William Cho says the 25-year-old officer was in critical but stable condition after surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center. He says doctors are optimistic he's going to survive.
