One dead, three homes destroyed in early morning fire

One man is dead and three homes were totally destroyed after an early morning fire Monday in Fountain. Other homes received damage too.

"The whole house was ablaze," says Ashley Campbell; she lives just a couple of doors down from a home that caught fire and lit up the night sky. Just after 2 a.m. the home on Windsor Lane was burning fast.

"One trailer was fully involved and it was spreading to two other trailers," says Fountain Fire Chief Darin Anstine, describing what things looked like when the first crews arrived on scene.

"It was above the trailer," says Campbell, pointing to the neighbor next door and showing how high the flames had to have been for her to see them.

"Probably 15 - 20 feet," adds Chris Srader.

That's what Campbell and Srader saw from their window; three homes were burning to the ground and two vehicles destroyed. They got ready to make their own escape.

"We got lucky," says Srader.

However, it's the neighbor's escape that has Campbell and Srader shaken up now; the family had trouble getting out.

"(They) Broke through the back window and actually ran barefoot over to a friend's house," says Campbell.

"Apparently there were some problems with the gate," says Chief Anstine.

Neighbors say the man of the house ran back in to save family pets, and didn't make it back out.

"The trailer was so involved in fire, there was no possibility of attempting a rescue," says Chief Anstine. He says the body was found later in the morning.

This fire leaves three people out of one home and two more from another. The cause is still being investigated.

As of this posting there's no word from authorities on word yet on the identity of the man killed.

The Fountain community is trying to help the families; they're collecting donations for the five people who are displaced. You can take items to any Fountain Fire Station. They say these families could use a lot of help; there's a 4-year-old boy, 5-year-old boy, and two 10-year-olds - a boy and girl.
