More than one hundred dead elk were discovered in New Mexico.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, all of the elk were found within a mile of each other.
The State Department of Game and Fish is investigating the cause.
Early suspicion is focused on a fatal virus.
The disease does not affect humans and is spread among animals by biting insects.
They also took samples of water to check for poisoning.
This could interrupt some hunting excursions in that area.
