One of a kind animal shelter opens in Manitou

A new animal shelter is opening up in Manitou Springs, with a very specific and unique mission. Safe Place for Pets is a non-profit rescue organization that takes in pets of terminally ill patients and works to find the animals new homes.

The local rescue has been around for 17 years, but has only been able to operate out of people's homes and through the internet. Now the organization has a home of its own, where they will be able to shelter primarily cats along with other animals. Safe Place for Pets will also continue its foster program for dogs and some cats who cannot live in the shelter.

Safe Place for Pets has about 20 animals in its care currently. They're hoping the new facility will help bring potential owners face-to-face with the adoptable pets and increase turnover so they can help more families and their animals.

"We expect our new facility to help us save more animals' lives, and to provide local animal lovers with more ways to make a difference. We have a lot of great pets available for adoption and now we have a place where their potential adopters can easily meet them face to face, as well as many more volunteer opportunities for people who want to give back," said Ann Davenport, President of the Board of Directors of Safe Place for Pets.

To celebrate the opening of the new shelter, and to help get the word out, Safe Place for Pets is hosting an event Saturday, October 26th from 2pm-5pm at 1141 Manitou Ave. The public is invited to meet all of the pets available for adoption, see the new shelter, take Halloween photos with the Great Pumpkin, bring your pets and dress up in costume. They will also have a yard sale.
