Palisade voters are being asked for a property tax increase that supporters say will help the town's fire protection district after a loss of funding.

Palisade Rural Fire Protection District Treasurer Maggie Somerville says the property tax increase is needed because the town will lose $50,000 in revenue when Xcel Energy's Cameo Power Plant closes at the end of the year.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports that taxes for a homeowner with a $200,000 house will increase from $51.82 a year to just under $100 a year if the proposal passes next month. Supporters of the tax increase say it will also help to build a new fire station.

The fire district services about 500 homes.
