Palmer Lake boy charged in stabbing of classmate

The fallout continues from Tuesday's assault where a 12 year old boy allegedly stabbed a classmate in the face and neck. "It appears he (the victim) has a ruptured esophagus and also some severing of the muscles on the right side of his neck." explains Palmer Lake Police Chief Keith Moreland.

As of Wednesday the boy is listed in serious but stable condition in Denver, but he will most likely need a feeding tube for at least a week. After an investigation, the 12 year old suspect will likely face a heavy charge against him. "We're going to be submitting for a charge of attempted murder in the 1st degree." says Chief Moreland. Police tell us the suspect had told fellow classmates that he wanted to stab the victim.

Residents of the quiet town still can't believe it. "I was shocked that something like that could happen in Palmer Lake." says Palmer Lake resident and parent Mary Beth Darnell. Chief Moreland agrees, "This is not only outside of the box for us, it's outside of the box factory."
The stabbing brings up a lot of questions for parents at the school. Investigators tell us the boys had a history, prompting parents to ask why the school didn't step in earlier. "There should be some type of mediation." says Darnell, "You know, have the parents brought in or at least the administration counselor talking to the boys as to try to mediate and see what the problem was."
