Pantry gives food boxes to soldiers, local families

Dozens of volunteers are sorting through hundreds of boxes of donated food at God's Pantry in Fountain.

Each year at Thanksgiving and Christmas, the food and clothing assistance ministry makes and donates holiday dinner boxes to current and former military members who were wounded serving overseas, as well as soldiers and local families in need.

Director Carey Adams says the wounded warriors and soldiers are served first because of their service to the country. "We want to help them as much as we can because they fought for us and defended us," Adams said.

The charity began in 1997 and Adams says the holiday dinner boxes have been a part of their outreach every year.

Adams says so many people wanted to help this year that they have turned the donations into a community event with a DJ, and face painting and balloon animals for the kids.

There is also a table where children are invited to make a homemade card that will be mailed with a candy cane to a soldier serving overseas.
