Parents fight to keep schools in D-70 open

Parents in Pueblo County are fighting to save their childrens' schools. Faced with a smaller budget next year School District 70 is considering closing Vineland Elementary and Middle Schools.

Other money-saving options being talked about include going to a 4-day school week, cut some funding for athletics or cut some but routes to name a few.

Concerned parents formed a group to come up with alternative recommendations, other than closing schools. "We as a community need to get together and let them know whatever decision they decide need to be as far away from affecting the kids as possible," said Jayme Riddell, a parent.

"Anytime we make a decision on the board we do what affects the classroom the least," said Lynette Pantello, School Board President for District 70.

The school district needs to cut $5 million from its budget.

A district advisory committee was also formed and they'll announce their recommended cuts in February.
