News 5 was first to obtain internal documents from the Sheriff's Office that discounts Sheriff Terry Maketa's claims that he did not have an inappropriate relationship with the the department's chief financial officer.
Maketa faces allegations of mismanaging his office, having relationships with subordinates and county employees, and possible fiscal impropriety.
To date, Maketa has denied all the allegations, but the documents we have in our possession paint a different picture.
In Oct. 2008, Maketa writes Comptroller Dorene Cardarelle, telling her his focus is on her.
Over the next several months, the emails are playful, affectionate, and sexual in nature.
In Dec. 2008, Dorene told Maketa she was going to curl up with her heating pad.
Maketa replied, "I wish I was your heating pad."
At times, the two seem worried their relationship might be exposed, so Sheriff Maketa began texting from his cell phone.
In a text message, Maketa writes, "I want you to know there is no happier place for me than being with you and holding you, being touched by you."
The conversation switches back and forth from casual conversations to Sheriff's Office personnel matters.
In an email, Maketa tells Cardarelle he has a meeting with undersheriff Paula Presley, and that she may resign and to be quiet about the topic.
Dorene replies, "I actually believe it would be good for the office that she pursue something else."
Keep in mind, Sheriff Maketa is accused of having another intimate relationship with Presley, all while being married.
Calls to Maketa for comment were not returned.
