The State Health Department is investigating a tasing case from Memorial Health Systems emergency department. It happened earlier this year. According to a statement from the hospital, a homicidal patient became physically violent and threatened staff in the ER. The patient was tased and subdued. No one was hurt.
The hospital does allow the use of tasers in certain violent situations. A hospital spokesperson says this situation called for it.
The patient has complained about the treatment to the state. The state investigated, but the final report has not yet been received by Memorial. The State has not yet returned a phone call to let us know when the report will be complete.
The hospital notes that one recent study by the Emergency Nurses Association found that more than half of emergency department nurses had been physically assaulted at work.
