Pay day switch leave some county employees feeling short changed

Fremont County employees will have their payday changed in April and many workers are worried the switch will leave them short changed.

County Manager George Sugars says the move has to do with timing. All 300 county employees are currently paid every other Friday for hours turned in the previous week.

However, their bank recently changed its policy and now the county's lone payroll clerk has less time to her job.

"If pay goes into the bank on Friday that means on Wednesday we have to have it done, but we don't get time sheets until Monday of that week. So that's the real difficulty there," Sugars said. "We need to get a two weeks spread in there."

But when the switch happens, employees will receive only one week's pay during that pay period instead of two. Around two dozen uniformed sheriff's deputies filled the seats at the County Commissioners meeting Tuesday morning to voice their concerns.

Sergeant Trace Hall of the Fremont County Sheriff's Office told commissioners that the switch would create a financial hardship for many employees.

"Because of the constant rollover of the pay funds, the employees won't see that full amount until they leave employment."

Not all county employees expressed frustration over the switch. In fact, some told News First 5 that it really doesn't bother them.

The county is offering to let employees take a 40 hour pay advance that can be repaid over a period of 12 weeks. The deputies suggested that the county consider deducting those hours from their final paychecks instead.

Sugars said that any discussion on the pay schedule change will take place during informal commissioners meetings to keep the employees in the loop.
