Phone Scam Warning: Caller tells victim family member is being held hostage

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a phone scam going around Southern Colorado. Lt. Jeff Kramer said the Sheriff's Office has received three reports of the same phone/financial scam over the past two days.

Kramer said the scam involves an out of state number. The caller tells the person that their family member has been in a minor car accident with a member of the mafia or someone who is on the run from the law. The caller then tells the person that their family member is being held hostage and money must be wired in exchange for their release.

Kramer said the stories are fake and the caller is just trying to extort money from the victim. The Sheriff's Office wants people to be aware and call law enforcement immediately if they receive a call like this. The Sheriff's Office can be reached at: 719-520-7100
