Pigs versus pit bulls

It was a horrific scene at Venetucci Farm on Tuesday afternoon.

Three pregnant pigs survived an attack by a pair of pit bulls. They were attacked around 4 p.m. Staff heard the pigs squealing from afar and came rushing to save the animals.

The farm manager Patrick Hamilton says the pigs suffered from deep lacerations on their snouts and around their jaws, but also adds that the animals are resilient and thinks they will be okay.

Staff were able to capture one of the dogs and turn it over to the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region.

Spokespeople at the Human Society say it's important to keep your dog restrained.

Captain Jamie Norris of the Animal Law Enforcement Services says, "It's not safe for dogs to be out running loose. There are cars that can hit them, things that they can get into, things that are toxic to them. Obviously, there are people out there that don't appreciate loose dogs and may harm them."

She also adds, "Always report any dog that you see running loose. Obviously, if you know where the animal lives, it's a good idea to make contact with the owner. I usually recommend building relationships with your neighbors because sometimes they don't realize their dogs are getting loose. So, it's always a good idea to at least talk to them."

If you do see a loose animal, it's best to call the Humane Society or the Sheriff's Office.
