A Fort Collins woman says a neighbor's pit bull that broke through a fence attacked her dog and bit her hand when she tried to protect her pet.

Barbara Berry says her 10-year-old Sheltie remains hospitalized after the attack Saturday. The 57-year-old woman says she suffered puncture wounds to one of her hands but doesn't think the damage will be permanent.

Berry says she had taken her dog across the street and was at a neighbor's yard when the pit bull broke a fence plank and rushed her pet. Berry says a neighbor hit the pit bull with a shovel to make it go away.

The Larimer Human Society's Animal Control unit has taken the pit bull to check it for rabies.
