Police are now identifying the man killed in an early morning accident on South Academy Blvd. as 68-year-old Antonio Camarillo Gallegos; a Colorado Springs resident.
Gallegos was found lying at the intersection of Academy Blvd. and Chelton Road around 6:15 Tuesday morning. Police say a passerby called them about the accident.
Gallegos died at the scene. Colorado Springs police are still trying to figure out what happened.
"It appears to be simply an accident," says Lt. Brian Ritz with the Colorado Springs Police Department, but he adds that they are investigating the scene as a possible hit and run.
The big problem putting the pieces together is a lack of witnesses. Police have been checking local businesses for surveillance footage, but many in the area tell News 5 that their cameras are just pointing towards their property; they don't show the intersection.
In the meantime, police are picking through what evidence they do have and weighing options.
"There's no indication that it was a body dump," says Lt. Ritz, speculating. "He may have fallen in the road way and they may never have seen him."
Police also say they don't have much information in terms of who any suspects might be.
"We have no information about any specific vehicle," adds Lt. Ritz. "Basically what you see out here is what we know."
Police are asking for help from anyone who saw anything; they're asking if you were in the area of Academy and Chelton Tuesday morning around six and saw something, to please give them a call. The main number is 444-7000, or you can call Crimestoppers at 634-STOP.
