Police situation over, but road still closed

Colorado Springs Police have confirmed to News 5 that an early morning tactical situation is over.

Springs police were assisting the Bureau of Alcohol,  Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)to serve a warrant for sexual assault, felony menacing and kidnapping when the suspect left his home around six on Friday morning.

The man was followed by police to the intersection of Winters Drive and El Paso street where he stopped his vehicle. Officers on scene wanted for the Tactical Enforcement Unit to arrive before approaching the suspect's white, Ford F-150.

The officers discovered the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Violent Crimes unit is investigating at this time, and the name of the man has not been released.

Winters Drive is closed between N Stone and N El Paso.  It will remain closed for a few more hours while the investigation continues.
