The next time you head downtown on a weekend you may see a few more cops than you're used to. It's part of a police effort to curb fights and other crime near the bars on Tejon Street. Much of the increased presence comes in the midst of months of fights and shootings in the downtown area.
Terra Verde store owner Chris Sondermann doesn't want people to get the wrong idea about crime in the downtown area. "I do think that the bar issue is a little overblown." she says. Even so, she agrees the extra patrols at night can't hurt. "It's always nice to have the extra security of a police presence." she explains.
Sondermann and other downtown store owners hope the increased police presence will deter crime and calm the concerns of people going visiting the area. "The public can feel good that the police department is being proactive to keep downtown a nice part of the city for people to visit." Sondermann says. It's not yet known exactly how the increased patrols will affect police coverage around the rest of the city.
